Child Language Problems
Child language problems involve difficulties in the development and mastery of language skills. Children may have difficulty understanding what they hear, see, and experience, or formulating what they want to say. Language problems may affect school performance.
There is a broad range of language difficulties, from mild concerns to those which impair children’s abilities to function at an age appropriate level. Some terms often associated with language impairment include: developmental delay, language delay, learning disability, auditory processing, central auditory processing disorder, hearing impairment, reading disorder, genetic syndrome, brain injury, and prematurity.
Reading & Literacy
Current research overwhelmingly points to auditory learning weaknesses (what we hear, not what we see) as the most common cause of reading disorders. Our reading assessments identify the presence and type of reading difficulties. During therapy, we offer strategies to help readers become more confident and successful.
Stuttering
Stuttering is an interruption in the flow and rhythm of speech which is often manifested by repetitions, hesitations, blocks, and other patterns. Current research suggests stuttering is caused by the interaction of 3 things: a physiological predisposition to stutter, the environment, and the individual’s reaction to the environment and to the stuttering itself.
Speech Easy Fluency Device
SpeechEasy is a proven fluency tool used to reduce stuttering and to help increase fluency. While you will not stop stuttering completely (there is no cure for stuttering), we can help you take back control of your speech, and your life.
The confidence you gain by saying what you want, when you want, is immeasurable. You’ll no longer fear social functions, avoid ordering food at a drive through, or keep quiet when you really want to speak out. We have received positive feedback showing that dramatic life changes are possible when using our fluency device.

Articulation
Articulation difficulties involve an impairment in the way speech sounds are formed and combined. These may be the result of faulty learning patterns, environmental influences, physical or cognitive factors, or hearing loss.
Voice
Voice problems may be characterized by inappropriate pitch (too high or too low), loudness (too loud or not loud enough), quality (harsh, hoarse, breathy, or nasal) or stress patterns (monotone or excessive stress). These problems may or may not be related to physical disorders of the vocal mechanism. Treatment for voice disorders is often coordinated with medical voice assessment.
Aphasia
Aphasia is the partial or complete loss of speech or language resulting from a stroke or injury to the brain. Aphasia is a communication impairment that may affect any aspect of language including comprehension, expression, numeric skills, reading and writing. The range of language damage can be mild to severe.
Aural Rehabilitation
Aural (Re)habilitation is learning or re-learning to listen and understand spoken language. We provide aural rehabilitation to both pediatrics and adults, involving therapy to integrate sound into meaning. Working through the levels of auditory development ensures successful transition to hearing aids or from hearing aids to a cochlear implant.
Accent Modification
The Center’s Accent Modification Program is designed to provide tools and information for professionals who wish to be more easily understood by their colleagues and others in the work environment. The program modules address a variety of work-oriented skills, and include extensive paired and group practice opportunities. Designed for motivated adults, the results of the 8-module program include improved confidence and communicative success for business and social situations, with practice outside the classroom expected.
Program modules are typically offered at the Center, but it may be possible to arrange modules or short courses on site at your work location, to avoid missed time for travel by employees. Group instruction is strongly recommended, but special arrangements are sometimes made for an individualized training program.
