Why see an Audiologist?
Savannah Speech and Hearing Center is dedicated to providing the best hearing healthcare possible. Our dedicated and experienced audiologists evaluate, diagnose, and manage hearing loss and hearing related disorders. Comprehensive hearing assessments for children and adults are provided. We recommend and fit a full range of hearing instruments as well as assistive listening devices. Our Center serves as a cochlear implant specialty program for audiology in the area. Our staff audiologists are certified cochlear implant audiologists specializing in implants for children and adults. Additional services include industrial hearing services, hearing aid repair, and hearing aid adjustments.
Indications that an evaluation may be needed:
- Difficulty hearing phone conversations
- Trouble hearing in a crowded room
- Infant not responding to sounds
- Exposure to loud noises
- Delays in developing speech
- Ringing noises in the ear
Hearing evaluations include an assessment of a person’s hearing to determine if there is a loss of hearing, the severity of the loss, the need for referral, and/or the feasibility of audiologic management. Various audiological tests include pure tone air and bone conduction audiometry, speech audiometry, impedance audiometry (tympanometry and acoustic reflex), and otoacoustic emissions (OAE).
Complimentary Hearing Screenings
The Savannah Speech and Hearing Center offers Complimentary hearing screenings by appointment, to be conducted by a trained audiology assistant on our staff. Please remember screen results are “pass” or “refer”. If your screening results in a ‘refer’, a full audiological evaluation will be recommended.
Cochlear Implant Program
A cochlear implant is a surgically implanted device designed to assist patients who have a severe to profound hearing impairment and receive little to no benefit from traditional amplification. Our audiologists provide audiologic evaluation and management for patients with a cochlear implant or for those considering a cochlear implant. If you feel as though your hearing loss is severe enough to warrant a cochlear implant evaluation, please contact our office to schedule and evaluation.
Assistive Listening Devices
Assistive Listening Devices help a person overcome some of the negative affects of background noise and distance that a personal hearing aid cannot overcome. Assisted Listening Devices may be used with many external sources, such as a television, telephone, or in a large group or classroom situation. Most assistive listening devices may be used with or without a hearing aid. The system most appropriate for an individual listener depends upon the extent of hearing loss, the person’s individual needs, location in which the system will be used, cost, etc. Some of the assistive listening devices currently available from the Center include: telephone amplifiers; FM and infrared systems; alerting devices; and TDD’s (telecommunication device for the deaf).

Industrial Audiology Services
Industrial audiology services are provided to industries requiring OSHA compliance, including audiometric tests, audiometric technician training, and other services, as required by the Occupational Safety and Health Administration. A full line of hearing protection is available at the Center.
Hearing Aid Evaluations and Fittings
Hearing aid evaluations and fittings represent an important part of the Center’s audiology program. The purpose of this service is to determine if using a hearing aid will help with communication and, if so, to select the appropriate instrument. This service is available to both children and adults. Hearing aids and accessories may be purchased through the Center.
