Our kids had a fantastic time meeting Savannah Firefighters and getting to see the ins and outs of one of their firetrucks. One of the team suited up in all their gear, including their breathing apparatus which makes their voices sound a bit like Darth Vader. They stressed to the kids that though they may look and sound scary when in their protective gear, it’s of vital importance that if ever in a fire or emergency situation, the kids run into the lifesaving arms of a Firefighter, not away and into hiding.
It was cool to hear that several of the Firefighters remembered having the same opportunity to meet Firefighters in their youth. We hope our kids remember this day as fondly and maybe someday, some of them will be Firefighters, too!
Thank you, Savannah Fire Department for this great experience and for all you do for our community! You are heroes!!
Fire safety was the theme of learning throughout the entire week at Sound Start, which is our early intervention, auditory/verbal therapy program for children who are either deaf or hard of hearing. The kids worked on vocabulary including firefighter, firetruck, ladder, smoke, extinguisher, alarm, station, helmet, suit, ax, and boots. Their targeted concepts were hot/cold, loud/quiet, across/over/under, first/last. They read “I want to be a Firefighter” by Richard Merrit, “Firefighter Peter” by James Dean, “Fire! Fire! Said Mrs McGuire!” by Bill Martin Jr., and “Fire Trucks” by Lerner Publishing.
